Week beginning 28th September

This week it was all about the music! The week opened with a live band experience where the whole school was able to see how much fun it can be to learn a musical instrument like the guitar and drums! Everyone was up in their feet rocking away! Y3/4 ended the week in a similar way as they all had their music lesson where they looked more closely at the drums! Lots of children listened hard and gave some fantastic answers. I think some of them benefited from the fact that they are learning to play an instrument themselves!

English`

This week we have looked more closely at story planning through story boards, snapshots and developing the skill of retelling stories orally. Some children had to speak extremely fast to retell a whole story in a few seconds! Then we were all treated with lots of acting talent as the children made predictions about the ending of Freya and the Goblins. They were able to see how good narration can move a story along for the audience.

Maths

The children have been able to improve their number bond knowledge; some up to 1000 and improve the skill of rapid recall. We are now able to recognise a pattern in a series of numbers and share the most effective methods we be been using to complete addition and subtraction calculations. This week we will put our learning into practise and apply it to problems.

History

This week we have begun to look more closely at everyday life for the Vikings. We went inside a long house and looked at how they were build and what features you would find inside. We soon realised it would be very smokey and dark and often the animals would share the house too! The children were able to make comparisons with their own homes and draw plans of their houses. Some children had to be estate agents and try and sell a long house picking out its best bits!
This week it's all about the fashion...Viking clothing, what did they wear, how was it made and what with?

Science

In science we are looking at how sound is made through vibrations; the music has really helped with that too. This week we will have a go at making our own telephones!

Looking forward to an exciting week of learning! Bring it on.

21st September

We have had another great week of learning and building new relationships. The children have all settled in well to their new classes and year group. We are very impressed how motivated the children are and their positive attitudes when facing new challenges.
We have looked at more projects that have all been of a very high standard. The children have brought home their first set of homework. Some of it will be challenging but with support your child should be able to complete it. If they have found any part difficult this will be addressed in class lesson time. Could we ask that homework is returned by Wednesday to ensure it can be checked before sending the next homework out on Friday?

English
This this week we have explored the features of Viking myths and compared main characters; looking at their similarities and differences. The children have been encouraged to look closely at the descriptive language used and are beginning to collect examples for their own writing. This week the children will take part in role play to make predictions about myths and begin to use a storyboard to identify key parts of a myth. They will also develop their speaking and listening skills though oral story telling.

Science
This week we have entered the world of sounds and begun to really listen to sounds around us in our everyday life and compared these sounds. The children are beginning to think about how sound is made and the vocabulary we use to describe sounds.  This week we will be looking at identifying how sounds are made, associating some of them with vibrating and recognising that vibrations from sounds travel through medium to the ear.

Maths
In Maths we have looked at basic skills and how we set out our calculations. We are practising our number bonds to 10, 100 in Y3 and in Y4 100, 1000 and beyond, using patterns to help us with larger numbers.  We have looked at rounding to 10 and 100 with up to 4 digit numbers.  We are developing the methods we use for addition and moving towards using more effective methods such as column addition.

Topic
In Topic we are beginning to look at the everyday life of the Vikings. This week we will be learning about Viking homes, what the houses where called, materials that they were made from and describing what they were like inside. Some children will compare a Viking house with a modern home and others will create a plan of a typical Viking house.

Looking forward to a great week ahead!

Sunday 13 September 2015

What a fantastic start to the new year in Y3/4!
All the children look so smart and are raring to go. The Viking projects that have come in so far have blown us all away. So much work and creativity has gone into them. Each child has presented their protects to their peers with confidence and we have learnt so much already from each other. Please keep them coming if you haven't brought yours in yet. They are going to be part of a large display in the hall for all to see.
Thank you for the completed swimming letters.  All the children worked very hard during their first lesson and I can't wait to see the rapid progress that will take place over the next 9 weeks.
As I'm sure you will know our main topic this half term is Vikings. The children will be immersed into the world of Vikings. We are really excited about joining them on their learning journey of discovery. They will look at who were the Vikings? Where and when did they live? Viking life, Gods, boats, houses, invasions and lots more.  We are beginning a new topic in Science on Sound.  In RE we are following 'Come and See' and our topic is People- The family of God in scripture. The children will take part in a weekly music lesson from an expert musician.  More detailed information about this term's work is on our website in the Y3/4 section.
This week in Maths we will look at place value and in English we will begin to look at a variety of Viking Myths and Sagas as well as reading our class novel 'How to Train a Dragon'.  The children can bring their own copy of the book into school if the wish for English lessons but they do not have to have a copy, it is optional.
This Friday is non uniform day and any donations sent in are for the Harvest Festival.

Thank you so much for your support so far this year with the Viking projects and those parents who were able to attend the induction meeting.  The information from the meeting will be up loaded onto the website for you to read.
